Interior Design in Millburn, New Jersey
Millburn takes its name literally: a burn is Scots for stream, and after the Revolutionary War the Rahway River was dammed in five places along it to run paper and other mills. One of those mill sites, on the river behind what's now Millburn Avenue, became the Paper Mill Playhouse in 1938, still the State Theatre of New Jersey. The township organized in 1857, and the Morris and Essex Railroad had already reached it by 1835, which is why downtown Millburn and Short Hills both grew up around train stations instead of a highway exit.
Short Hills is the other half of the township, and it has its own origin story: Stewart Hartshorn bought the first thirteen acres near Hobart Avenue and Chatham Road in the 1870s, eventually controlled more than 1,500 acres, and capped every plot at half an acre so the community stayed walkable instead of sprawling into estates. That's still visible today. Short Hills homes are large and expensive, but they sit closer together than the price would suggest, which changes how a primary suite addition or a new kitchen bump-out actually gets sited.

Luxury Residential Interior Design in Millburn
Near downtown, in the Wyoming section and the streets around Millburn Avenue, the work is sensitive renovation: opening a dated kitchen, adding a spa bath, restoring and extending original millwork so a house lives like it was built this decade and looks like it was built a century ago. In Short Hills, the work is about scale inside a tighter footprint than the price tag suggests: custom kitchens built around real cooking, spa primary baths with heated stone and freestanding tubs, paneled studies, wine rooms, and built-ins that make a large house feel intentional rather than empty.
The fundamentals hold at either scale. We plan lighting on separate circuits, so the sconces, the overheads, and the evening dimmers are three different decisions instead of one switch by the door. We size furniture and millwork to the architecture instead of the showroom floor. We restore original detail where it survives and add matching millwork where it doesn't, down to the profile of the molding. And we plan for the systems, HVAC, smart-home, acoustics, before they get cut into a hundred-year-old wall.

Commercial Interior Design in Millburn
Downtown Millburn draws from across the region on the strength of the Paper Mill Playhouse and a real concentration of restaurants and boutiques along Millburn Avenue, and the professional community behind it runs deep. We design the retail and restaurant interiors that fit that walkable, upscale strip, along with offices, medical and dental suites, and financial and legal practices across Millburn and Essex County: real materials, controlled lighting, and finishes that read considered rather than corporate.

The INSABELLADESIGN Difference
Millburn and Short Hills are connected enough that a design decision gets discussed before the paint is dry, and Beth Insabella Walsh is the one who walks every room, reviews every material selection, and signs off on the plan before it goes to your contractor. That's true on a downtown Tudor and a Short Hills estate alike.
Since 1996 our growth here has come mostly through referral rather than advertising, in a township small enough that everyone already knows whose renovation went well and whose didn't. Beth Insabella Walsh still walks every Millburn project in person, from a downtown kitchen to a Short Hills wing addition, which is a hard thing to fake once a practice gets busy.

How a Project Works
1. Start with a conversation
A consultation at our Little Silver studio or your property. We talk through the space, the scope, how you live or work in it, and what you want the finished project to accomplish. No obligation, and you will always be speaking with Beth.
2. Design and decisions
Space planning, materials, millwork and cabinetry design, lighting, and furnishings developed into one coherent plan, with drawings and documentation your contractor and trades can actually build from.
3. We carry it to the finish
We coordinate the trades, manage orders and timelines, and stay on the project through installation and styling, so you get a completed space rather than a plan left for you to assemble.
