Interior Design in Chatham, New Jersey
Chatham's downtown, the central business district and the stretch of east Main Street beside it, is a designated historic district, overseen by a Historic Preservation Commission the borough formed in 1989. Any work that changes a storefront's street-facing appearance goes to that Commission before it goes to a contractor. A few blocks out, the housing stock changes character entirely: center-hall and Dutch colonials through the borough and on Fairmount and Rolling Hill, older farmhouses toward Green Village, where the Passaic River marks the township's southern edge.
That split, a regulated Main Street and unregulated residential streets around it, shapes how a Chatham project actually starts. Downtown, the first conversation is with the Commission: what a sign can look like, whether a window can change size, what has to stay in kind. On Fairmount or in Green Village, the constraint is the house itself, a floor plan usually drawn for a family that entertained less and cooked less than the one living there now.

Luxury Residential Interior Design in Chatham
A lot of Chatham colonials still have the floor plan they were built with: a closed kitchen at the back, a formal living and dining room at the front that gets used twice a year, a stair hall that cuts the ground floor in half. The renovation usually starts by taking that wall out, opening the kitchen to a real family room, and turning the formal rooms into space that earns its square footage on an ordinary Tuesday, not just Thanksgiving.
From there the work gets specific: honed stone and inset cabinetry that reads as original to a 1920s house, a mudroom built into a back hall that was never designed to hold three kids' worth of coats and cleats, a primary bath added over what used to be a small bedroom. We build the paneled studies, window seats, and coffered ceilings a colonial this age can carry, and we source millwork profiles to match what's already there instead of what's easiest to order.

Commercial Interior Design in Chatham
Chatham's Main Street runs on small, independent businesses, and every one of them operates inside the historic district the Commission was formed to protect: repairs have to use matching materials, and any change to a storefront's appearance needs approval first. We design law and wealth-management offices, salons, and medical and dental practices along Main Street and its side streets, building the storefront application into the schedule from day one instead of treating it as a delay. The facade is settled first. The interior is where the real differentiation happens.

A consultation at our Little Silver studio or your property. We talk through the space, the scope, how you live or work in it, and what you want the finished project to accomplish. No obligation, and you will always be speaking with Beth.
2. Design and decisions
Space planning, materials, millwork and cabinetry design, lighting, and furnishings developed into one coherent plan, with drawings and documentation your contractor and trades can actually build from.
3. We carry it to the finish
We coordinate the trades, manage orders and timelines, and stay on the project through installation and styling, so you get a completed space rather than a plan left for you to assemble.
