Interior Design in Chatham, New Jersey
Chatham is the kind of place people move to on purpose and rarely leave. The Midtown Direct train slips into Manhattan in under forty minutes, then delivers commuters back to tree-lined streets, deep front porches, and a Main Street where the pharmacy still knows your name. It is a town that prizes continuity, and its houses reflect it: center-hall colonials, shingled Dutch colonials, and the occasional stately Tudor, most of them built to last and passed carefully from one exacting family to the next.
Homeowners here tend to be accomplished, understated, and quietly demanding. They are not looking to shout. They want rooms that feel considered rather than decorated, kitchens that can handle a Tuesday-night homework marathon and a Saturday dinner party with equal grace, and a house that grows more comfortable and more beautiful the longer they live in it. That is a specific brief, and it rewards a designer who listens closely before drawing a single line.

Luxury Residential Interior Design in Chatham
Chatham colonials have wonderful bones and, often, floor plans drawn for a different era. The work often begins by reconsidering how a house actually flows: opening a cramped galley kitchen to the family room without erasing the home's character, carving a mudroom worthy of three kids and a Labrador out of a back hall, or reworking a warren of small rooms into a gracious, connected first floor. We respect the architecture and then quietly make it work harder.
From there, the craft takes over. We design chef-caliber custom kitchens with honed stone, unlacquered brass, and inset cabinetry that looks original to the house. We build paneled studies, window seats, and coffered ceilings; we design primary baths with heated floors, freestanding tubs, and marble that will still look right in twenty years. Millwork, lighting, and built-ins are where a good colonial becomes a memorable one, and that is where we put the most care.

Commercial Interior Design in Chatham
Chatham's walkable downtown supports the kind of polished small businesses that reflect their clientele, and we bring the same rigor to commercial work that we bring to residential. From boutique law and wealth-management offices to design-forward salons, specialty retail, and private medical and dental practices along Main Street, we create interiors that feel confident and current without chasing trends. Every commercial project balances brand, comfort, and durability, so a space still looks considered years after the ribbon is cut.

The INSABELLADESIGN Difference
Shepherding a full Chatham renovation from first sketch through the last light switch without the client feeling the strain takes real coordination. Because we manage the entire process in-house, our clients get one point of accountability and a team well suited to this kind of project, with contractors we trust.
Every Chatham project runs through founder Beth Insabella Walsh personally. That is why so much of our work comes from referrals and repeat clients. In a town where reputation travels fast, that is the standard we bring to every gracious colonial we take on.

I must say it's been my pleasure to have had the opportunity to work with Beth and her team at Insabella Design. My boss has been a long time client of Beth, over 25 years. And over those many years I was fortunate enough to work with Beth directly. She is extremely attentive and knows exactly what needs to be done. She has designed numerous major renovations and reconstruction projects for us. She has always been a pleasure to work with from the beginning of the projects to the very end. If I ever needed something in a pinch she always makes it happen. I would be completely lost without her and her support in keeping my boss comfortable and happy. Thank you Beth, to you and your team for your excellent services.

How a Project Works
1. Start with a conversation
A consultation at our Little Silver studio or your property. We talk through the space, the scope, how you live or work in it, and what you want the finished project to accomplish. No obligation, and you will always be speaking with Beth.
2. Design and decisions
Space planning, materials, millwork and cabinetry design, lighting, and furnishings developed into one coherent plan, with drawings and documentation your contractor and trades can actually build from.
3. We carry it to the finish
We coordinate the trades, manage orders and timelines, and stay on the project through installation and styling, so you get a completed space rather than a plan left for you to assemble.

Chatham Interior Design FAQs
Do you work in both Chatham Borough and Chatham Township?
Yes. We work throughout both the Borough and the Township, from the older colonials near the train and Main Street to the larger homes out toward Fairmount and Green Village. The architecture and lot sizes differ, and our approach adapts to each.
Can you open up a dated colonial floor plan without ruining its character?
That is one of our specialties. Chatham colonials often need better first-floor flow, but the charm is in the details. We reconfigure and modernize while preserving trim profiles, proportions, and the sense that the house was always meant to be this way.
Do you handle full renovations or only decorating?
Both. We offer full-service design including space planning, custom kitchens and baths, millwork, lighting, furnishings, and complete project management, as well as furnishing-focused projects for homeowners who love their layout and want it beautifully finished.
How involved is the founder in a Chatham project?
She is the one taking the first walk-through of your house, marking up the floor plan herself, and coming back for the final punch list, not just the ends of the project with a rotating team filling in the middle.
Do you design for young families as well as empty nesters?
Absolutely. A house that works for a young family, bike helmets by the door and a spot to drop backpacks that is not the kitchen island, needs a different plan than one for a couple settling into a quieter stage, and we design around whichever chapter of life you are actually in.
How do you manage timelines and contractors in Chatham?
We keep a standing weekly walk-through with whichever trade is active that week, so you get one update instead of three different phone calls telling you three different things. Borough projects tend to move through permitting a little differently than the Township's, and we plan the schedule around that from the start rather than discovering it midway.
