Interior Design in Livingston, New Jersey

Riker Hill, on Livingston's border with Roseland, spent the Cold War as a Nike missile control site; it's now a 42-acre art park with working studios, and the fenced-off 16 acres next door, Walter Kidde Dinosaur Park, protects an actual Jurassic-era dinosaur trackway closed to the public. That's an odd pair of facts for a town best known for split-levels and good schools, and a fair preview of the design work: a lot of what looks like a standard postwar house has more going on underneath than the street view suggests.

Livingston was incorporated in 1813 and named for William Livingston, New Jersey's first governor, but the town most people recognize is a product of the postwar boom, rapid enough that the population passed thirty thousand by 1970. That's why the core housing stock is split-levels and center-hall colonials from the 1950s and '60s: smaller, boxier kitchens, lower ceilings, and floor plans divided into formal rooms a modern family doesn't use the way they were drawn.

Luxury Residential Interior Design in Livingston

For an original Livingston colonial or split-level, full renovation is the bulk of the work: reworking a choppy 1960s floor plan, building a kitchen with furniture-grade cabinetry, stone counters, and an island sized for actual family life, and adding a primary suite that didn't exist in the original layout. For new custom builds, we start earlier, working from the architect's plans so the interior and the architecture get resolved together, not one waiting on the other.

The built-ins and millwork are what make either version feel finished rather than furnished: a paneled study for a work-from-home parent, a mudroom that survives cleats, backpacks, and the dog, crown detail and a run of wainscot that give a boxy 1960s living room some architecture it didn't start with. We wire rooms so the overhead, the counter task lighting, and the evening dimmer are three separate decisions, not one switch by the door, and we scale furniture to the room instead of the showroom floor.

Commercial Interior Design in Livingston

Many Livingston residents own or lead the businesses along the township's commercial corridors and the wider Essex County market, and we design the offices to match: executive suites, medical and dental practices, financial and legal offices, boutique retail. Space planning, custom millwork, and finishes that read professional rather than corporate, the same restraint that drives the residential work here, whether the address is a corner office or a colonial.

The INSABELLADESIGN Difference

Livingston families tend to hire in stages: a kitchen first, then a primary suite, then the rest of the house before a milestone. Beth Insabella Walsh runs point on each one personally instead of passing it down a chain once the contract's signed, so the person in your kitchen at the first meeting is still the person signing off at the final walkthrough.

Since 1996 we've built this practice on referrals and repeat business rather than advertising, which fits a town like Livingston: split-levels and good schools on the surface, a Nike missile site turned art park underneath. We'd rather be recommended by the neighbor who already knows what a project here actually involves.

I must say it's been my pleasure to have had the opportunity to work with Beth and her team at Insabella Design. My boss has been a long time client of Beth, over 25 years. And over those many years I was fortunate enough to work with Beth directly. She is extremely attentive and knows exactly what needs to be done. She has designed numerous major renovations and reconstruction projects for us. She has always been a pleasure to work with from the beginning of the projects to the very end. If I ever needed something in a pinch she always makes it happen. I would be completely lost without her and her support in keeping my boss comfortable and happy. Thank you Beth, to you and your team for your excellent services.

How a Project Works

1. Start with a conversation

A consultation at our Little Silver studio or your property. We talk through the space, the scope, how you live or work in it, and what you want the finished project to accomplish. No obligation, and you will always be speaking with Beth.

2. Design and decisions

Space planning, materials, millwork and cabinetry design, lighting, and furnishings developed into one coherent plan, with drawings and documentation your contractor and trades can actually build from.

3. We carry it to the finish

We coordinate the trades, manage orders and timelines, and stay on the project through installation and styling, so you get a completed space rather than a plan left for you to assemble.

Livingston Interior Design FAQs

Are you interior designers or interior decorators?

We are a full-service design firm. That means space planning and design documentation, custom kitchens and baths, millwork, lighting, furnishing and installation. Decoration is part of the work, not the whole of it.

What does full service include?

Drawings, custom millwork and casework, lighting design, finishes, furnishings, procurement, trade coordination and installation. We coordinate the trades and manage the schedule.

Have you worked in this area?

The studio is in Little Silver and we work across New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and Florida, Livingston included.

Do you design commercial spaces as well as homes?

Yes. Alongside residential work we design medical, corporate, government, retail and multifamily interiors.

Do you take single rooms, or only whole homes?

Both. Scope runs from a single room to a full renovation or new build.

How do your fees work?

It depends on scope, from a single room to a full renovation or new build. After an initial consultation we provide a detailed proposal.

Who leads the project?

Beth Insabella Walsh, the firm’s founder, leads every project.
