Philip Johnson built the Glass House on Ponus Ridge Road in 1949, one of more than a hundred Modern houses that went up around New Canaan by the Harvard Five and their followers over the next three decades, according to the Glass House's own architectural survey. Four of those houses, including Johnson's, are individually listed on the National Register. Interior design in New Canaan means working inside that history, whether the house in question is one of them or the center-hall colonial next door.
New Canaan's zoning still reflects that low-density, architecturally serious character: the Four Acre zone requires 174,240 square feet and 350 feet of frontage, with Two Acre and One Acre zones filling in closer to the village. Around the village center itself, the New Canaan/God's Acre Historic District requires a Certificate of Appropriateness for any exterior change visible from the street. In the colonials and estates, we do the full residential program at scale: custom kitchens built around real cooking, primary baths with heated stone and a freestanding tub, paneled libraries, mudrooms sized for a Connecticut winter, and the millwork and built-ins that make a large classic house feel warm rather than formal. Additions get detailed to match existing profiles closely enough that they read as original, not appended.
In the modern houses, the discipline reverses: clean lines, warm wood against steel and glass, furnishings placed to keep the structural grid visible, lighting that reveals a ceiling plane instead of hiding it behind a fixture. 1. Start with a conversation
A consultation at our Little Silver studio or your property. We talk through the space, the scope, how you live or work in it, and what you want the finished project to accomplish. No obligation, and you will always be speaking with Beth.
2. Design and decisions
Space planning, materials, millwork and cabinetry design, lighting, and furnishings developed into one coherent plan, with drawings and documentation your contractor and trades can actually build from.
3. We carry it to the finish
We coordinate the trades, manage orders and timelines, and stay on the project through installation and styling, so you get a completed space rather than a plan left for you to assemble.
