Interior Design in Fairfield County
Fairfield County is not one kind of place. Greenwich alone runs from the backcountry off Round Hill Road — long gravel drives, stone walls, acreage behind a gate — to Belle Haven and Riverside, where the houses face Long Island Sound and every window is doing work. New Canaan is quieter and stranger: white colonials along Oenoke Ridge, and then the glass-and-steel houses the Harvard Five dropped into the woods after the war. Westport is a beach town and a river town at once, with center-hall colonials inland, converted barns near the Saugatuck, and modern houses on the water by Compo. Four towns, four different design problems.

We are a full-service firm — ASID and IIDA members, WBENC-certified and woman-owned — based in Little Silver, New Jersey, working across New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and Florida. Nearly thirty years, more than three million square feet designed, over 500 clients, residential and commercial. Beth Insabella Walsh leads every project. She is in the room at the first walkthrough and she is the one reviewing shop drawings before a single piece of millwork gets cut.
Design in this county has to survive comparison. Clients here have seen good work — in their own buildings, in their friends' houses, in the city apartments many of them also keep. So we plan first and decorate last. Space planning comes before anything: circulation, sightlines, where the light lands in February. Then the built environment — cabinetry, paneling, honed stone, the lighting plan, the height of a window seat, where the coats actually go. Furnishings and art follow once the architecture of the room is right. Coastal sites add their own constraints, from flood elevations to salt air to finishes that hold up two hundred feet off the Sound, and local historic review sets the pace on the older stock.
What We Design Across Fairfield County
On the residential side we work whole-house and we work room by room. A full renovation means space planning and floor plans, custom kitchens built for real cooking and real entertaining, primary baths in honed marble or limestone, paneled studies and libraries, mudrooms and butler's pantries, wine rooms, stair and ceiling detail, and a lighting plan that is drawn rather than guessed. Every piece of millwork is designed for the house it is going into — a shingle-style waterfront in Westport and a 1950s modern in New Canaan do not get the same cabinet, the same reveal, or the same hardware. We also handle furnishings, textiles, rugs and art, and we manage the project through to install so the trades are not left to interpret an idea.
We do the same work commercially. Offices and executive suites, family-office and financial space, medical and dental practices, hospitality and club interiors, multifamily lobbies and amenity floors, showrooms and retail. Commercial projects bring code, ADA, landlord work letters and building standards into the drawing set, and they run on a lease calendar rather than a family calendar. The method does not change: plan the space, detail the millwork, specify the finishes, coordinate the trades, and hold the schedule. We are an interior design firm, not a staging company — nothing we do is temporary dressing for a sale.

You're based in New Jersey. How does that work on a Fairfield County project?
Travel is built into how we run a job, and has been since 1996 — we work across New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and Florida. Beth is on site for the moments that matter: the first walkthrough, field measure, demolition review, millwork templating, stone selection at the slab yard, and install. Between visits the project runs on drawings, shop-drawing review, and standing calls with your architect, builder and trades. We coordinate with local contractors, cabinetmakers, stone fabricators and electricians, or bring our own bench where it makes sense. It is also worth saying that many of our clients keep homes in more than one of these states. One design team across a Greenwich house, a Manhattan apartment and a Florida place is simpler than three, and the result actually looks related.
Can you work on a mid-century modern house in New Canaan without wrecking it?
That is largely an exercise in discipline. These houses were built on a module — post spacing, glazing lines, plane changes — and most of the damage done to them comes from adding detail they never had. We work inside the original geometry: flat-panel and slab cabinetry with tight reveals, integrated storage instead of applied furniture, stone and wood chosen for grain rather than pattern, and lighting recessed or hidden so the ceiling stays quiet. The unglamorous half of the job is performance — insulation, glazing, radiant floors, mechanical routing — because these houses were built before anyone expected them to hold heat. We plan those upgrades with the architect and builder so they disappear into the fabric.
What does full service actually include?
Everything from the first plan to the last picture hung. Space planning and floor plans, custom kitchen and bath design, millwork and cabinetry drawings, lighting and electrical plans, plumbing and hardware specification, tile and stone selection, paint and finish schedules, furniture design and procurement, window treatments, rugs, textiles, art, and project management through construction and install. You get one point of view and one point of contact. Beth leads the project and stays on it. Clients who want only a kitchen or only a primary suite are welcome too — the scope narrows, the process does not.
Do you take commercial work in Fairfield County?
Yes. Roughly half of what our firm has designed over the past three decades is commercial: offices, executive and family-office suites, medical and dental practices, hospitality, club and clubhouse interiors, and multifamily amenity space. Fairfield County has real corporate density along the I-95 and Merritt corridors, and those projects come with landlord work letters, building standards, code and ADA review, and a fixed occupancy date. We design to the calendar and to the lease. Much of our work, commercial and residential both, comes from referrals from past clients, architects and builders.
