Connecticut has two great house traditions, the colonial and the modern. Neither forgives a badly drawn detail.

Connecticut homes and businesses can have very different starting points: an established house, a modern structure, a water-adjacent property, or a professional setting that needs a more capable client experience. The work begins with the specific building and the people who use it, not an assumed regional aesthetic.

In Connecticut we work the Gold Coast: Greenwich, New Canaan and Westport, an hour of shoreline and back road that ranks among the wealthiest ground in America. Greenwich runs from the estates of the backcountry — Round Hill, Lake Avenue, walled acreage and long drives — down to Belle Haven, Riverside and Old Greenwich, where the houses meet Long Island Sound. New Canaan holds white clapboard colonials on Oenoke Ridge and, a few miles away in the trees, the glass and steel houses that made the town a modernist address after the war. Westport sits on the Saugatuck and the Sound at once, with center-hall colonials, converted barns, and waterfront houses near Compo Beach.

The housing stock is the real story. Eighteenth and nineteenth century colonials with low ceilings, deep sills and original floors. Shingle-style houses with wraparound porches and rooms that open one into the next. Georgian and Federal center-halls. Postwar modern with post-and-beam structure and glass walls that were never intended to be curtained. Each demands its own vocabulary — millwork profiles, ceiling treatment, stone, hardware, lighting. Design that flatters one will look borrowed on another, which is why we begin with the building rather than a style.

What We Design Across Connecticut

We take on whole-home and focused interior projects including kitchens, baths, primary suites, libraries, custom millwork, lighting, art, furnishings, and outdoor-adjacent spaces. Design decisions are coordinated from layout through final material and furnishing selections so the interior reads as a whole.

For selected office, professional, wellness, retail, hospitality, and private-client projects, we consider operation, approach, comfort, lighting, material durability, and the appropriate expression of the organization.

INSABELLADESIGN was established in 1996 by founder and principal Beth Insabella Walsh, ASID, IIDA, CID. The studio is based in Little Silver, New Jersey and is WBENC-certified and woman-owned. A principal-led process connects the design direction to the planning, materials, documentation, sourcing, coordination, and installation support appropriate to the engagement.

Residentially, the range runs from whole-house renovation to a single room done properly. Space planning first: circulation, room use, sightlines to the water where there is water, and where the light lands in winter. Then the built environment — custom kitchens for real cooking and entertaining, primary suites and baths in honed marble or limestone, paneled libraries and studies, mudrooms and butler's pantries, wine rooms, window seats, built-in storage, stair and ceiling detail, and a drawn lighting plan. Millwork is designed for the specific house, so a shingle-style waterfront and a 1950s modern do not receive the same profile, reveal or hardware. Furnishings, window treatments, rugs, textiles and art complete it, and we run the project through construction and installation. Waterfront properties bring flood elevation, salt air and material durability into the specification, and historic districts bring local review.

We do the same work commercially: offices and executive suites, family-office and financial space, medical and dental practices, hospitality and club interiors, showrooms, and multifamily lobbies and amenity floors. Those projects add code, ADA, landlord work letters and building standards, and they answer to a lease date. Connecticut's corporate corridor along I-95 and the Merritt keeps that side of the practice busy across the region. Whether the job is a house on the Sound or an office floor in Stamford, the method holds: plan the space, draw the millwork, specify the finishes, coordinate the trades, hold the schedule. We do not do home staging.
