Interior Design in Brooklyn, New York
Brooklyn interior design runs into the Landmarks Preservation Commission before it runs into anything else. Brooklyn Heights became the city's first designated historic district in November 1965, months after the landmarks law itself was signed. Cobble Hill followed in 1969, Park Slope in 1973, and DUMBO not until 2007, decades after its cast-iron warehouses had already been cut into loft apartments. Four different designation dates, four different rulebooks, and every one of them governs the brick facing the street, not what happens behind the front door.
That distinction is most of the job. INSABELLADESIGN has practiced interior design across the New York metro since 1996, and a landmarked brownstone's interior, the parlor floor, the primary suite, the kitchen at the back, is the owner's to reconfigure once the Commission has signed off on the facade. Knowing which battles are worth fighting on Pierrepont Street and which floor is actually load-bearing is the work that happens before a single finish gets picked.

Luxury Residential Interior Design in Brooklyn
In the brownstones of Brooklyn Heights and Cobble Hill, the facade stays close to what the Commission already approved: the stoop, the ironwork, the cornice line. Behind it we rebuild almost everything, a real kitchen island where a butler's pantry used to be, a primary bath carved out of a small back bedroom, plaster medallions and marble mantels repaired rather than replaced. The garden level usually becomes where the family actually lives.
DUMBO is the opposite problem. Its warehouse shells, cast-iron columns, timber ceilings, window openings the Commission won't enlarge, have been fixed since the 2007 designation, so the design work is about what goes inside that envelope. We build millwork around the columns, warm the palette against the original brick, and fit closets into a floor plate built for freight elevators, not a family of four.

Commercial Interior Design in Brooklyn
Brooklyn's commercial buildings sit inside the same historic districts as its houses, so a restaurant build-out on Montague Street or a gallery in a Cobble Hill storefront answers to the same Commission review as a stoop repair next door. We design restaurants, boutique retail, creative offices, and medical and dental practices across Brooklyn Heights, DUMBO, and the brownstone blocks, with millwork and lighting suited to a shell the tenant can't alter.

The INSABELLADESIGN Difference
Every Brooklyn project runs through founder Beth Insabella Walsh personally, from the first landmarks or board filing to the last piece of art on the wall. On a block where the Commission has final say over the front elevation, having one person accountable for both the application and the design keeps the two from working against each other.
INSABELLADESIGN has designed interiors across New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and Florida since 1996, and is ASID- and IIDA-credentialed and WBENC-certified as woman-owned. For a Brooklyn Heights brownstone or a DUMBO loft, that means a firm that has already done the paperwork this kind of building requires, more than once.

How a Project Works
1. Start with a conversation
A consultation at our Little Silver studio or your property. We talk through the space, the scope, how you live or work in it, and what you want the finished project to accomplish. No obligation, and you will always be speaking with Beth.
2. Design and decisions
Space planning, materials, millwork and cabinetry design, lighting, and furnishings developed into one coherent plan, with drawings and documentation your contractor and trades can actually build from.
3. We carry it to the finish
We coordinate the trades, manage orders and timelines, and stay on the project through installation and styling, so you get a completed space rather than a plan left for you to assemble.
