Interior Design in Locust, New Jersey
Locust is the stretch of Middletown along the Navesink River and Clay Pit Creek. David Burdge settled the 357-acre tract in 1715 and ran a grist mill there; after the Civil War the farming and oystering village turned into a summer colony, when the Reed family built the four-cottage Reedmont estate starting in 1869. Much of that waterfront core is now the Locust Historic District, listed on the National Register in 1974, and interior design here works inside that designation.
Exterior changes to a contributing house need a Certificate of Appropriateness from Middletown's Historic District Landmarks Commission before anything else gets permitted — window replacement, an addition, a change to the roofline. INSABELLADESIGN has practiced full-service interior design since 1996: space planning, custom kitchens and baths, millwork, lighting, furnishings. In Locust that means renovations planned to satisfy the commission on the outside while the interior gets reworked entirely.

Luxury Residential Interior Design in Locust
Whole-home work in Locust means reworking large houses on wooded, waterfront lots so the plan matches how the family actually lives: kitchens built around real cooking, primary suites with honed stone and a freestanding tub, a great room that opens to the trees and the water beyond it. Where the original layout walls off the creek or the river, we open it — new sightlines from the kitchen toward the dock, a mudroom sized for a house that actually uses its waterfront.
Any specimen shade tree over 24 inches in diameter needs a township permit before it comes down, which matters on a wooded lot where the site plan and the tree canopy are the same conversation. We work that into the design early, with the architect and the arborist, rather than after the drawings are set. Inside, the register stays warm: rift-cut and reclaimed woods, natural stone, and glass sized to the tree line rather than a generic picture window.

Commercial Interior Design in Locust
Locust itself is almost entirely residential, so our commercial work here serves the wider Two River area around it: private medical and professional offices, boutique practices, small hospitality interiors. The same discipline carries over from the houses — durable finishes, custom casework, lighting planned for how the space is actually used — scaled to a business rather than a family.

The INSABELLADESIGN Difference
Beth Insabella Walsh leads every Locust project personally, from the first site visit through installation, with the same small team throughout. On a wooded or waterfront lot, where the historic commission, the township, and the tree ordinance all touch the same renovation, that continuity is practical: one person tracking what each approval actually allows before the next drawing gets made.
INSABELLADESIGN is a WBENC-certified, woman-owned firm and a member of ASID and IIDA, working with the same millworkers, plasterers, painters, and installers across Monmouth County. On a Clay Pit Creek or Navesink River property, salt air and tidal exposure test a finish faster than an inland house does, and that continuity — the same trades, the same standards — is what keeps a kitchen or primary bath looking finished years in, not months.

I must say it's been my pleasure to have had the opportunity to work with Beth and her team at Insabella Design. My boss has been a long time client of Beth, over 25 years. And over those many years I was fortunate enough to work with Beth directly. She is extremely attentive and knows exactly what needs to be done. She has designed numerous major renovations and reconstruction projects for us. She has always been a pleasure to work with from the beginning of the projects to the very end. If I ever needed something in a pinch she always makes it happen. I would be completely lost without her and her support in keeping my boss comfortable and happy. Thank you Beth, to you and your team for your excellent services.

How a Project Works
1. Start with a conversation
A consultation at our Little Silver studio or your property. We talk through the space, the scope, how you live or work in it, and what you want the finished project to accomplish. No obligation, and you will always be speaking with Beth.
2. Design and decisions
Space planning, materials, millwork and cabinetry design, lighting, and furnishings developed into one coherent plan, with drawings and documentation your contractor and trades can actually build from.
3. We carry it to the finish
We coordinate the trades, manage orders and timelines, and stay on the project through installation and styling, so you get a completed space rather than a plan left for you to assemble.

Locust Interior Design FAQs
Are you interior designers or interior decorators?
We are a full-service design firm. That means space planning and design documentation, custom kitchens and baths, millwork, lighting, furnishing and installation. Decoration is part of the work, not the whole of it.
What does full service include?
Drawings, custom millwork and casework, lighting design, finishes, furnishings, procurement, trade coordination and installation. We coordinate the trades and manage the schedule.
Have you worked in this area?
Yes. Holmdel Residence, Colts Neck Residence and Monmouth Medical Center are in Monmouth County. The studio is in Little Silver and we work across New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and Florida.
Do you design commercial spaces as well as homes?
Yes. Alongside residential work we design medical, corporate, government, retail and multifamily interiors. Work in Monmouth County includes Monmouth Medical Center, Monmouth County Prosecutors Office and Monmouth County Child Advocacy Center.
Do you take single rooms, or only whole homes?
Both. Scope runs from a single room to a full renovation or new build.
How do your fees work?
It depends on scope, from a single room to a full renovation or new build. After an initial consultation we provide a detailed proposal.
Who leads the project?
Beth Insabella Walsh, the firm’s founder, leads every project.
