Interior Design Firm in Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ
Ho-Ho-Kus takes its name from a Lenape word for red cedar, and its streets hold the colonials and Tudors that earned the borough a National Historic Landmark. INSABELLADESIGN is its interior designer.

Interior Design in Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey
Ho-Ho-Kus is a square mile of Bergen County built around The Hermitage, the Gothic Revival house on Franklin Turnpike where Aaron Burr married Theodosia Prevost in 1782 and which became a National Historic Landmark in 1970. Around it sit the Ackerman-Demarest and Terhune-Hopper stone houses, both on the National Register since 1983, and streets of center-hall colonials and Tudors built through the early twentieth century. INSABELLADESIGN is the interior design firm for a borough that takes its architecture seriously.
That history shapes the design problem. A center-hall colonial from the 1910s or 1920s was framed with load-bearing interior walls separating small, single-purpose rooms, and closets built for a fraction of what a family owns today. The first decision on a renovation is almost always structural: which walls between the kitchen, the pantry, and the dining room are actually carrying the floor above, since that answer decides whether an open kitchen means a header beam or a full redesign.

Luxury Residential Interior Design in Ho-Ho-Kus
Our work usually starts in the two rooms these houses handle worst: the kitchen and the primary bath. We open cramped original layouts around a properly sized island, using furniture-grade cabinetry and honed stone so the new room reads as though it belonged to the house from the start, not bolted onto it. In the baths, we build in heated stone floors, a freestanding tub, and custom vanities sized to the room, not to a catalog spec.
The details decide whether a Ho-Ho-Kus renovation looks right or looks off. We match new crown, wainscot, and paneled doors closely enough to the originals that you can't find the seam, and restore existing millwork instead of replacing it wherever it can be saved. Where the house never had a mudroom, a real laundry room, or enough closets, we add them, running new wiring and lighting without touching the plaster we're trying to keep.
- Historic-home renovation
- Sensitive kitchen updates
- Millwork restoration & matching
- Spa baths in older homes
- Added mudrooms & storage
- Period-appropriate lighting
- Furnishings & art
- Whole-house space planning

Commercial Interior Design in Ho-Ho-Kus
Ho-Ho-Kus's village center, built up around the train station and Sheridan Avenue, supports a small cluster of professional offices, legal and financial practices, and boutique retail. The brief follows the village's own architecture: real materials, proportions sized to a small storefront, not a big-box footprint, and finishes that still look right well after opening day. We plan the space, specify the millwork and lighting, and manage the trades, giving a small commercial fit-out the same full-service attention as a house nearby.

The INSABELLADESIGN Difference
Ho-Ho-Kus is small enough that a finished house gets noticed on the same streets where a neighbor might mention it at the train station. Beth Insabella Walsh leads every project personally, so the calls on an old house, what to keep, what to rebuild, what to leave alone, are made by the same person who's made them for thirty years, not passed down a chain.
We've worked on Bergen County's older homes since 1996, long enough to know a house like The Hermitage doesn't survive by accident; someone maintained it, generation after generation. We bring that same intent to a Ho-Ho-Kus colonial, treating the renovation as one more generation of upkeep, not a break from what came before.

I must say it's been my pleasure to have had the opportunity to work with Beth and her team at Insabella Design. My boss has been a long time client of Beth, over 25 years. And over those many years I was fortunate enough to work with Beth directly. She is extremely attentive and knows exactly what needs to be done. She has designed numerous major renovations and reconstruction projects for us. She has always been a pleasure to work with from the beginning of the projects to the very end. If I ever needed something in a pinch she always makes it happen. I would be completely lost without her and her support in keeping my boss comfortable and happy. Thank you Beth, to you and your team for your excellent services.

How a Project Works
1. Start with a conversation
A consultation at our Little Silver studio or your property. We talk through the space, the scope, how you live or work in it, and what you want the finished project to accomplish. No obligation, and you will always be speaking with Beth.
2. Design and decisions
Space planning, materials, millwork and cabinetry design, lighting, and furnishings developed into one coherent plan, with drawings and documentation your contractor and trades can actually build from.
3. We carry it to the finish
We coordinate the trades, manage orders and timelines, and stay on the project through installation and styling, so you get a completed space rather than a plan left for you to assemble.

Do you take single rooms, or only whole homes?
Both. Scope runs from a single room to a full renovation or new build.
How do your fees work?
