Bergen County is where New York money buys land. In Saddle River and Upper Saddle River that means multi-acre wooded lots with long driveways, brick Georgians, stone-and-shingle houses, and a generation of 1980s and 1990s builds with double-height foyers now waiting to be brought up to date. Ho-Ho-Kus and Allendale are older and tighter, with village centers, train stations, center-hall colonials and Tudors on shaded streets. Oradell and Paramus carry the postwar stock, ranches, splits and capes, most of them expanded at least once. Hackensack is the county seat, with the courthouse, the medical center and the office towers that come with both.

Owners here are, for the most part, people who commute into Manhattan or run something of their own, and they bring a professional standard to the house. What they ask for is scale handled with restraint: a 9,000-square-foot floor plan that still reads as a home, a kitchen and adjoining family room that work as one room without turning into an airport terminal, a two-story entry that gains proportion instead of just volume. They also want the calendar respected. We manage the trades, the lead times and the installation so the project lands when we said it would.

What We Design Across Bergen County

Residential work in Bergen County runs from full gut renovations of established colonials and Tudors to reworking large 1990s houses room by room, plus ground-up construction on the bigger lots. We start with space planning, then build the interior architecture: custom kitchens with real working zones and butler's pantries, primary suites with honed stone baths and proper closet planning, paneled libraries, wine rooms, home offices built for people who take calls from home three days a week, and the custom millwork, casework and ceiling detail that give a large house a reason for its height. Lighting is designed room by room. Furnishings, rugs, textiles and art are specified against the same plan and installed together. On new construction we join the architect and builder at schematic design, while proportion and window placement are still adjustable.

Your studio is in Monmouth County. How does that work for a Bergen County project?

It works the way it has for decades: New Jersey is a small state and we run projects across it, along with New York, Connecticut and Florida. Site visits, trade meetings and installation supervision are scheduled into the project rather than squeezed in, and Beth attends the meetings that matter. Distance is a logistics question, and logistics is part of what you hire a full-service firm to manage.

Can you handle very large homes on multi-acre lots?

Yes. Large houses in Saddle River and Upper Saddle River are a planning problem before they are a decorating problem, because the risk is a floor plan that sprawls without a hierarchy. We resolve circulation and room adjacencies first, then use millwork, ceiling detail, lighting and material changes to give each space a defined character rather than letting square footage set the tone.

Do you design medical, dental and law offices in Hackensack?

We do. Hackensack's mix of courthouse, hospital and corporate tenants is exactly the commercial work we handle: reception and consult rooms, exam and operatory layouts, conference rooms, executive offices and back-of-house. We deliver space planning, custom casework, lighting design, durable finishes and furniture, and we manage the schedule so the practice or firm opens on time.

Will you work with our architect and builder on a new house?

Yes, and the earlier the better. Coming in at schematic design lets us influence ceiling heights, window placement, kitchen and bath rough-ins and the material palette before framing locks them in. From there we carry the interior through construction administration, millwork shop drawings, lighting, finishes, furnishings and final installation.
