Interior Design in Cranbury, New Jersey
Cranbury is the rarest thing in central New Jersey: a genuinely preserved village. Its Main Street of white clapboard Colonials, brick Federals, and Victorian gems is a designated historic district, and its residents are the kind of people who chose Cranbury precisely because it looks the way it looked a century ago. There's a millpond, a general store, church steeples, and a shared understanding that you don't tear things down here; you steward them. It is small, deeply charming, and quietly affluent, home to families who value character over square footage and history over headlines.
Designing in Cranbury is an exercise in respect. These homes carry real age, with original moldings, plaster walls, narrow staircases, and fireplaces in every front room, and the people who own them love those details even when they complicate modern life. Our approach here is to preserve what makes a Cranbury house special while making it function for a family in the twenty-first century: a kitchen that works without gutting the home's soul, systems that disappear into old walls, comfort and light introduced with a light hand. The wrong renovation can strip a village home of the very thing that made it worth owning. The right one makes it better without making it different.

Luxury Residential Interior Design in Cranbury
Cranbury's housing stock is a designer's history lesson: eighteenth-century Colonials, Federal townhouses, Greek Revivals, and Queen Anne Victorians, many with their original bones intact. We approach each one as a custodian first. That means retaining and restoring period millwork, mantels, and staircases; matching new moldings and hardware to the old; and detailing every intervention so it reads as part of the house rather than an addition to it. When we do open up a floor plan or add a rear extension, we match the proportion and detail of the original architecture.
Kitchens and baths are where the real reconciliation happens. A Cranbury family still wants a proper island, honed stone, and a beautiful primary bath. They simply don't want those things to announce that a modern renovation occurred. We design furniture-grade kitchens that feel like they could have evolved with the house, and baths that borrow classical proportion and materials so a new spa shower sits comfortably beside a two-hundred-year-old wall. Every mechanical upgrade, including lighting, climate, and storage, is threaded invisibly through old construction.

Commercial Interior Design in Cranbury
Cranbury's commercial life is charmingly small: boutique professional offices, private practices, and the independent shops and eateries that give Main Street its character. We design these spaces to fit the village, favoring warm, historically sympathetic interiors over anything that would feel out of place beside a two-hundred-year-old storefront. Real materials, considered lighting, and a light, tasteful hand are the rule.

The INSABELLADESIGN Difference
Historic homes reward patience and punish shortcuts, so every Cranbury project runs through one person, founder Beth Insabella Walsh, who has spent nearly thirty years designing for clients who care about doing things right. In a village this tight-knit, reputation is built house by house, and so much of our work comes from referrals and repeat clients: people who watched a project go beautifully and quietly asked for the same care.
We're a full-service firm, which matters enormously in a home where every wall hides a surprise. We manage space planning, custom kitchens and baths, millwork, lighting, furnishings, and the sensitive coordination that historic renovation demands: sourcing the right craftspeople, sequencing the work, and protecting the character of the house at every step. You get a village home that's been improved with real reverence, and a process that respected both your house and your time.

How a Project Works
1. Start with a conversation
A consultation at our Little Silver studio or your property. We talk through the space, the scope, how you live or work in it, and what you want the finished project to accomplish. No obligation, and you will always be speaking with Beth.
2. Design and decisions
Space planning, materials, millwork and cabinetry design, lighting, and furnishings developed into one coherent plan, with drawings and documentation your contractor and trades can actually build from.
3. We carry it to the finish
We coordinate the trades, manage orders and timelines, and stay on the project through installation and styling, so you get a completed space rather than a plan left for you to assemble.

Cranbury Interior Design FAQs
Do you specialize in historic homes in Cranbury?
Yes. Cranbury's historic district is defined by period Colonials, Federals, and Victorians, and homes like these are a specialty of ours. We treat the original architecture as the starting point, not an obstacle, and every intervention is scaled to keep the house's age and character intact while it works for a family living in it today.
Can we get a modern kitchen without ruining our historic home?
That's the goal on every kitchen we touch here. Cabinetry profiles, hardware, and finishes are chosen to match the age of the house, so a new island, stone counters, and full modern function sit in the room without announcing themselves as a renovation.
How do you handle additions to a historic Cranbury home?
Additions are the part of a project most likely to look wrong if rushed, so we study the roofline, window rhythm, and materials of the existing house before drawing a single wall of new space. The goal is an addition a neighbor would have trouble dating, and we coordinate with preservation guidelines where they apply.
What areas of Cranbury do you serve?
We serve all of Cranbury, including the Main Street Historic District, Cranbury Village, Old Cranbury, and the surrounding area, as well as neighboring West Windsor and Princeton.
Do you take on commercial projects in the village?
Yes. Storefronts and small offices on a street this historic need to fit in more than they need to stand out, so we keep material choices, lighting, and scale in line with the surrounding architecture rather than importing a generic commercial look.
Who will manage my project?
Founder Beth Insabella Walsh personally runs every project, so you have one experienced, accountable designer guiding a historic renovation from start to finish.
