Interior Design in Cranbury, New Jersey

Cranbury's Main Street Historic District went on the New Jersey Register in 1979 and the National Register the year after, roughly two hundred buildings: Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne, most built before 1900. The First Presbyterian Church anchors the district's Greek Revival architecture. Cranbury Brook, dammed in the early 1800s for a gristmill, still runs behind Main Street; the millpond it made is now Brainerd Lake. The township itself dates to the late 1600s, and a standing Historic Preservation Commission still reviews any exterior change inside the district line.

Designing inside that line is an exercise in restraint. These houses carry real age: original moldings, plaster walls, narrow staircases, low door heights, a fireplace in nearly every front room. The Commission's standard for exterior repair is in-kind: a rotted sash gets a matching sash, not vinyl, and clapboard gets clapboard. That protects the street Cranbury is known for, and it means an exterior budget goes further into materials than it would elsewhere. Inside, past what the Commission can see from the street, is where the actual list, a working kitchen, more light, gets solved.

Luxury Residential Interior Design in Cranbury

Cranbury's housing stock runs from eighteenth-century farmhouses to Federal townhouses to Queen Anne Victorians, most with their original bones intact. We treat retained fabric as the starting point: period millwork and mantels restored rather than replaced, new moldings matched to the old profiles, any rear addition proportioned to read as part of the house, not an add-on. Where we open a floor plan, we're opening walls that were never load-bearing, since these houses were framed with a center hall and separate rooms off it, not one open span.

Kitchens and baths are where the real negotiation happens: a proper island, honed stone, a primary bath that does more than a single pedestal sink, built so none of it looks like it arrived last year. We build furniture-grade kitchens with inset doors and period-correct hardware, and baths that borrow classical proportion, wainscot heights, and trim profiles, so a new shower sits comfortably next to a two-hundred-year-old wall. Lighting and mechanical upgrades get threaded through old plaster and low attics rather than boxed in as new soffits.

Commercial Interior Design in Cranbury

Cranbury's business district is Main Street itself: boutique professional offices, private practices, and the independent shops and restaurants housed in the same historic buildings the Preservation Commission protects. We design these spaces to answer to the street they're on, real materials, in-kind exterior repairs, lighting and casework calibrated to century-old ceiling heights, rather than a generic build-out that would read as out of place beside an 1840s storefront.

The INSABELLADESIGN Difference

Historic buildings punish shortcuts, so every Cranbury project runs through one person, founder Beth Insabella Walsh, who has designed interiors since 1996 and has taken projects through preservation review before. In a two-hundred-building historic district, that means someone who already knows what the Commission will ask for before the application goes in, and can plan the schedule around it instead of being surprised by it.

We're a full-service firm, which matters in a house where a wall can hide a surprise, knob-and-tube wiring, a chimney that was bricked over, a floor joist that was never sized for a soaking tub. We manage space planning, custom kitchens and baths, millwork, lighting, and furnishings, and we handle the sensitive parts of a historic renovation ourselves: sourcing craftspeople who work in old houses, sequencing so the Commission's review doesn't stall the trades, and protecting original fabric while the rest of the house gets rebuilt around it.

How a Project Works

1. Start with a conversation

A consultation at our Little Silver studio or your property. We talk through the space, the scope, how you live or work in it, and what you want the finished project to accomplish. No obligation, and you will always be speaking with Beth.

2. Design and decisions

Space planning, materials, millwork and cabinetry design, lighting, and furnishings developed into one coherent plan, with drawings and documentation your contractor and trades can actually build from.

3. We carry it to the finish

We coordinate the trades, manage orders and timelines, and stay on the project through installation and styling, so you get a completed space rather than a plan left for you to assemble.

Cranbury Interior Design FAQs

Are you interior designers or interior decorators?

We are a full-service design firm. That means space planning and design documentation, custom kitchens and baths, millwork, lighting, furnishing and installation. Decoration is part of the work, not the whole of it.

What does full service include?

Drawings, custom millwork and casework, lighting design, finishes, furnishings, procurement, trade coordination and installation. We coordinate the trades and manage the schedule.

Have you worked in this area?

Yes. Vito Mazza Salon and Woodbridge Tenant Lounge are in Middlesex County. The studio is in Little Silver and we work across New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and Florida.

Do you design commercial spaces as well as homes?

Yes. Alongside residential work we design medical, corporate, government, retail and multifamily interiors. Work in Middlesex County includes Vito Mazza Salon and Woodbridge Tenant Lounge.

Do you take single rooms, or only whole homes?

Both. Scope runs from a single room to a full renovation or new build.

How do your fees work?

It depends on scope, from a single room to a full renovation or new build. After an initial consultation we provide a detailed proposal.

Who leads the project?

Beth Insabella Walsh, the firm’s founder, leads every project.
