A pro bono project: the Monmouth County Child Advocacy Center
A 35,000 square foot facility planned so children and families can go through a difficult process in a warm, steady environment, with the children’s own drawings in the hallway tiles.
The center exists to give children who have been abused one place where the medical, investigative, and therapeutic work can happen together. The firm designed the 35,000 square foot facility pro bono.
It holds a pediatric forensic medical suite, a nurse’s office, interview rooms, therapy spaces, and a large waiting area. The living room, kitchen, and waiting areas connect, and they are furnished like a home, so different kinds of cases can be handled in the setting that suits them.
The hallways are tiled in custom porcelain that carries children’s drawings. The finishes throughout were chosen to be child-friendly and not to intimidate.
Why it is on this site
It is the clearest example of what the firm means by planning a space around the people who will use it. The New Jersey chapter of ASID gave the project a Bronze award, as the project page records.
